Chilliwack Rally Launches Boycotts in 2015

1

On Saturday January 10, friends of wild salmon came together at Superstore in Chilliwack for an Ocean Farmed Atlantic Salmon Boycott rally. Gary Haggquist, Glyn Lewis, Michael Gildersleeve, Elder Frank Supernault, Angela Brady, Don Bain, Kai O’Shea and others handed out the brochure “What do I and my children need to know about farmed salmon!” It was a big hit with many of Superstore’s customers! Drummers and singers sang the sacred songs to help bring attention to the informative event. Signs and posters were strategically placed and very visible. This helped with our effective awareness campaign. Gary Haggquist and Chris Gadsden did a fantastic with their photography! Chris did a great YouTube video on the event, capturing the passion and love the boycotters had in doing this meaningful work to not only protect human health, but also mobilizing support to have harmful net-pen fish farms removed from migration routes of wild salmon.

We encourage people to donate money towards a powerful documentary film Twyla Roscovitch and Alexandra Morton are planning called “Sushi Confidential.” This will help our boycott strategy expand to include Sushi restaurants that sell ocean farmed Atlantic salmon.

This year we are mobilizing a Wild Salmon Caravan this spring as a major event raising awareness about industrial threats to wild salmon and what we can collectively do about correcting this. Having it in the spring will be very timely as it will also bring saving wild salmon as a major issue in the 2015 federal election! We need to get out lots of votes, especially young people!

There will be a big ocean farmed Atlantic salmon boycott rally at Costco in downtown Vancouver on Saturday, January 24, 2015! Watch for the posting! This is being organized by Shirley Samples and Lois Larose! The Fraser Valley boycott chapter will send a good delegation to be a part of this exciting event.

We will have another boycott rally on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at Walmart in Mission from 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm. Another one will take place on Saturday, March 14 at Costco in Abbotsford, 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm. Everyone is welcome to join us! The more the merrier!

Our hands go up to all the beautiful people around the world who are joining the boycott of ocean farmed Atlantic salmon. We are very encouraged that the Atlantic Coalition for Aquaculture Reform is very active on the east coast! We do plan on making contact with this coalition to grow and learn how we can best have open-net feedlots removed from both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.
